Abstract

The aim of the study was to attract the attention of regional researchers to an important but up to now rarely examined subject: spatial relations of ownership changes. The study deals with companies (the most concentrated unit of functioning capital) and the spatial localisation of them. Now companies (enterprises with more than 250 employees) represent 0.4% of enterprises and concentrate the 57% of the equity capital of joint businesses.

Some companies developed from former socialist large companies. Company analyses show that surviving strategies of some socialist large companies were successful and were able to preserve for posterity not only the core companies but the former departments, the developed organisational relationships and in this way spatial connection.

The majority of large companies joined to international networks by their proprietary structure. That's why it is important for spatial researchers to analyse the process of international integration of the Hungarian economy. Where are the leader centres of the economy and in which part of the (semi)periphery is Hungary situated?

However, localisation of the functioning capital is very problematical due to the spatially separated owners (and their often complicated relations), company centres, subcentres and production. According to this dilemma we sketch the present capital attractive and leader centres in Hungary as an experiment. The new information reinforces our existing image of strong spatial differentiation of the Hungarian economy.
