About the Journal

Tér és Társadalom (“Space and Society”), founded in 1987, is a quarterly scientific journal of the Institute for Regional Studies of the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies. As György Enyedi, head of the editorial board formulated, Tér és Társadalom “does not publish achievements of one single discipline, but scrutinizes the relationship between space and society from various perspectives of different disciplines in a specific way”. In the past more than 30 years the journal established itself in Hungary as the leading theoretical journal for social sciences concerned with spatial issues, the published issues reflected its interdisciplinary nature. It can be interpreted as a great achievement that the journal aroused interest of experts in related disciplines in questions of spatiality.

The journal was initially edited by József Tóth in Pécs, then by Pál Beluszky in Budapest between 1989 and 1993, followed by the Győr editorial team led by János Rechnitzer until 2010. Starting from 2011 the editorial work returned to Budapest with Györgyi Barta taking up the role of the editor-in-chief. The editorial team since 2011, led by Györgyi Barta aims at strengthening cooperation with related disciplines, at opening the journal internationally (through publishing articles of well-known non-Hungarian scholars in Hungarian and longer abstracts in English), and at intensifying contacts to higher education (through publishing key articles for university curricula). Notwithstanding the journal’s traditions, the theoretical nature of the journal has been strengthened, and it has allowed more space for different genres. Monika Mária Váradi took over the position of editor-in-chief in July 2019. She was succeeded in January 2023 by Gabor Lux.

Tér és Társadalom is an open access journal from 1st January 2022. Readers can access all of its articles without any fees and limitations.
